Don't use Tax Mechanic. If they make an error, they will just say it's ultimately you who are responsible for ensuring your taxes are prepared correctly. What's the point?

I used Tax Mechanic to prepare my taxes for a number of years and overall had a reasonable experience to start. Their team was relatively responsive to questions and got everything prepared in a timely manner.

This all went south after my third year with them. In January, I received an re-assessment notice from the CRA. After some investigation, I determined that one of my T-slips had been missed. I reviewed the list of items I had sent to Tax Mechanic and confirmed I had sent it to them, and after some back and forth Tax Mechanic admitted the mistake and confirmed that slip had not been included when they prepared my return. It was their error.

No harm, no foul to a certain degree, we all make mistakes and at the end of the day I didn't dispute that I owed the additional amount in taxes. However, due to the mistake, in addition to the additional taxes, I now owed an additional $900 in penalties and interest.

I reached out to Tax Mechanic mistakenly thinking that since it was their mistake, they would cover the penalties. I could not have been more wrong. I was offered that they would do this year's taxes free of charge. Based on last year, that would be worth about $350. When I said that wasn't acceptable and expected the full amount, I was told I signed off on my taxes so ultimately it was my fault. I mean... of course that's why the CRA sent me the bill. Taxes are complicated. What's the point of paying an "expert" to prepare your taxes if the expectation is that you need to go through and doublecheck their work because if there is an error, they offer no fair recourse.
