Working with investment advisors in my mid 40's, I was told about the importance of financial planning and after a few minutes of discussion, we'd hunker down into the fun part - choosing stocks, funds, portfolio of funds, bonds, asset allocation, dollar cost averaging etc etc. A year later, we'd review performance and make changes to chase after last year's winners. And so on.

Like driving a boat on the open waters, building your retirement savings in your 40's is pretty simple and fun. But when it comes time to dock your boat (and not outlive your savings) there's so much more to consider and the downside risk in getting it wrong is larger and difficult to recover from. I made a great choice in hiring Rona to dock us into safe harbour.
