I had a 15 minute discovery call with Blake De Luca. As he was referred to me from our lawyer Bill Cord. I like to have open transparent professional relationships. As such, I asked Blake what his fee structure is and what is the fee of the 15 minute discovery call. He said, there was no charge for the discovery charge but all future work would incur fees. We decided not to engage Blake further.

I recently received my lawyer's invoice I noticed a $282.50 paid to RLB (DeLuca) which was a complete surprise to me. To earn the public's trust you must be honest and transparent - you must do better!

We have used RLB for 2 seasons now for both our personal which includes hst and for our corporate accounting.

Our first year we received a bill for over $4200.00 and were a little shocked at the sticker price on that but were told that the inital set up work was timely and a bit complicated but would yeild a lower cost going forward as all the peices were now in place for the next cycle year. Fast forward to this year and the bill is over $4500.

There wasn't a whole lot of complications on our filings and we did have some questions about tax deductions for an electric vehicle lease and we were left with more questions than answered. None the less, they appear to charge per phone call and per email which is literally what lawyers do. If I wanted a litigation esq accountant I would have went to one.

I have requested an itemized bill which would show the break down of fees and where their time was spent. No where from the onset was this identified as to where rates and costs were to be charged. Karen Webster was our accountant whom I guess needed to have her worked reviewed by a colleague and a manger to which we were charged for.

I have yet to receive my itemized bill and when we got the basic bill, all of their staff who were "working" on our file, were off on vacation or medical leave.

To spend over $8700 in 2 years while other firms charge half their price for honestly better results is arrogant at best. Their quality of work doesn't reflect their prices.

So please do yourself a huge favour and research this company before you trust them or else you'll be saddled with a bill for their okay services but inept responses.

If they fail to produce an itemized cost breakdown, I will have no choice to file a complaint with the better business bureau and fire them as our accountants.

This review is subject to change should the company rectify these issues.

***UPDATE***
Staff reached out to explain their price structure and offered some assistance. I'm not in love with their price structure as they do in fact charge like a legal office. I don't want to discredit their hard work but Legal billing is in its own category and accounting shouldn't be. Having said that, there knowledge of accounts and tax are exceptional.

Going forward I'd like to see more transparency with the fee structure as well as what to expect when your invoice is sent ie. Cost break down.

RLB has been invaluable to Immigrant Services Guelph Wellington, not only for its exceptional professional services to our non-profit organization, but also for the commitment to give back to the community and empower many New Canadians at the annual Income Tax workshops we organize with their support. As a new client in 2023 I have been disenfranchised with this accounting firm .Not only was the total fee for completion of my income taxes above anything that we had ever paid previously in 65 years . A RRIF withdrawal was also considered exorbitant in price based on consultations with professional wealth managers in Guelph. Even at the $220.00 per hour rate this would have taken numerous hours to evoke the ultimate fee charged.
When an itemized invoice for the simple RRIF withdrawal was requested it was not produced and instead the entire transaction was just lumped to-gather under correspondence & phone calls. I did ask how many phone calls were made & to whom & I requested the same for correspondences but I did not receive this information. So this
certainly suggests very exobitant fees were charged for a very simple withdrawal from my RRIF
Additionally these accountants never took the time to meet with
me in person showing an overall lack of courtesy to a new client.
For these reasons listed above I will not use this company again & why you all should strongly consider whether you are willing to accept this treatment and the over inflated fees.

I called in on Friday morning to inquire about doing my taxes through RLB. I was redirected to someone named Patricia, who had me leave a voicemail.

I only heard back from Patricia this Monday afternoon. Sort of disappointing that a business would take such a long time to get back to a prospective client.

In contrast, I called Weiler & Co. that same Friday after RLB left my in the dust. I ended up speaking with Dennis Weiler that Friday, who I now just finished my first appointment with.

I'll be going with Weiler & Co. for all of my tax-related business as it's clear RLB does not care about quick response times which some of us find important. As well, the guys at Weiler & Co. are absolutely great, they were a pleasure to sit down with and I'm now quite looking forward to doing my taxes with them.

RLB seems to have very knowledgeable people on staff. I encountered problems with their personnel being far less than prompt, temporarily misplacing files, billing overcharges, and some priority, communications and courtesy problems. In-person meetings have been excellent. A mixed review.
